A licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for patient care and works under the supervision of a registered nurse, physician, in hospitals, medical care clinics, physician's offices, home health and hospice agencies, schools as well as in private duty practice, Nursing Homes, and Rehabilitation Centers.
Applicants should have the ability to handle responsibility and be interested in caring for patients of all ages.
Content
The Practical Nurse (PN) Program content includes, but is not limited to:
- Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing
- Theoretical instruction and clinical experience in both acute and long-term care situations
- Theoretical instruction and clinical application of vocational role and function
- Personal, family and community health concepts
- Nutrition
- Human growth and development over the life span
- Body Structure and function
- Interpersonal relationship skills
- Mental Health Concepts
- Pharmacology and administration of medications
- Legal aspects of practice
- CPR
- Computer and employability skills
Theory, Laboratory and clinical experiences are integrated, with one-half of the program spent in health care facilities providing patient care.
Industry Credentials
Upon successful completion of this program, graduates receive a certificate and are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN licensure examination.

Licensed graduates (LPNs) may transition into the Broward College Registered Nurse Program, transferring college credit from McFatter's PN Program (PN/RN Articulation Agreement.)
The Practical Nursing Program offers full-time day and full time evening. The full time day program meets Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 2:30pm. The full time evening program meets Monday through Thursday, from 2:00pm to 10:00pm.
Application Process
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, must achieve a grade level of 11 on the Basic Skills (TABE) Test, and pass all four tests on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). For more information about this test and the times it is given, go to the bottom of this page.
After passing the TABE Test and presenting a high school diploma or transcript, applicants must pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) as well as a level 2 criminal background check, drug test and a recent physical exam with documentation that their immunizations are current must be completed. PROGRAM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Must be a high school graduate and have a diploma or an official transcript from a regionally accredited school, or have a GED (General Education Development) Diploma.
- Acceptable scores on the Test of Adult Basic Skills (TABE): 11.0 grade Reading, 11.0 grade Math, 11.0 grade Language on the Advanced level.
- Acceptable scores on the Test of Essential Academic Skills V (TEAS): Proficient level or 58.7% overall. Log-on to www.atitesting.com to create a username & password.
- PN Orientation and Interview with the program counselor by appointment.
- Completion of physical/immunization forms by a physician.
- Successful completion of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Level II Background Check ($47).
- Pass a drug screening test ($26).
ALL students entering the Practical Nursing Program (Block 1 or advanced) must complete ALL of the above entrance requirements whether a first time student or an advanced student.

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
Enroll for the TEAS V Preparation classes by doing the following:
- Pass the Advanced Level TABE test with an 11.0 or higher in reading, math, and language or present your degree (+copy) or official transcripts (sealed) from a regionally accredited U.S. institution by appointment.
- Call (754) 321-5753 for an appointment with your guidance counselor, Ms. Rachel Victor.
- Bring a picture ID, 2 proofs of Florida residency, and a $40 fee.

Register for the TEAS V exam by doing the following:
- After successfully passing the TABE, please obtain a TEAS Permission slip from the guidance counselor by appointment at least a week ahead of the testing date.
- Sign-up or pay at Registration with the completed slip at least two days ahead of the testing date.
- Bring a picture ID and a non-refundable $40 fee. (Price is subject to increase)
