BOAT & YACHT
REPAIR/REFINISHING TECHNOLOGY (VA)
Boat and Yacht Repair/Refinishing
Technology provides Marine Service Technology students with the skills
necessary to qualify for employment as carpenters, cabinet makers, wood
finishers, spray and brush painters, fiberglass laminators and repair persons
within the marine service industry. Students may enroll in August, November,
January, April or June, and are required to meet minimum standards in reading,
mathematics and language before completion of the program.
Key elements of the Marine Service Technology program are covered by an
individualized, competency-based method of instruction in three separate
sections that make up the program. The first of these, woodworking,
incorporates the entire spectrum, from basic framing and erecting bulkheads, to
making cabinets, drawers and doors. The second, painting, includes both
classroom and hands-on activities. Students are taught to prep materials before
paint or varnish applications and the proper use of paint related tools and
equipment. Fiberglass, the final section, focuses on the repair and manufacture
of fiberglass products. Varied use of tools for different repair and lamination
processes is covered by lectures and demonstrations.
MARINE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY (VA)
Marine Service Technology
is a job preparatory program that presents students with technical and
manipulative skills that are necessary to diagnose, overhaul and repair marine
systems and their components. The curriculum also includes AC/DC electrical
theory as it pertains to ABYC & NMEA standards, as well as marine
electronics installation & repairs (radar, sonar, GPS, depth finders and
communications systems). With the application of mechanical theory, class
lectures, hands-on shop activities, demonstrations and visual aids, students
are taken through marine sub-systems and instructed in their theory of
operation, diagnosis and repair. Each Marine Service Technology student is
expected to maintain a journal that is based on daily lectures. Evaluations are
contingent on results of periodic tests and manipulative assessments throughout
the program. The Marine Service Technology program offers students the opportunity
to prepare for various careers in the marine field.
Marine Service Technology applicants are admitted to the program quarterly and
must meet the state’s minimum academic standards in reading, mathematics and
language. Successful Marine Service Technology graduates are eligible for
entry-level positions as marine riggers, service writers or parts personnel,
outboard engine technicians, stern drive and inboard gasoline technicians and
entry-level inboard diesel technicians.
WELDING TECHNOLOGY (VA)
Become part of the Marine
Service Technology, construction, and other industries that require skilled
welders and welder helpers. Develop your ability in welding basics, cutting and
joining metals, blueprint reading and preparation of layouts.
The Welding program offers Marine Service Technology students the opportunity
to become skilled welders and welder helpers by providing instruction in the
basics of welding, with equal emphasis on theory and hands-on experiences. By
advancing through a series of processes, students learn to use gas or
electricity to cut or join metal parts. Blueprint reading and the preparation
and layouts are an important part of this program.
Marine Service Technology students may enroll in this program at the beginning
of each quarter, and must satisfy minimum academic requirements in reading,
mathematics and language prior to completion. Graduates of the Marine Service
Technology welding program are eligible to take the American Welding Society
(AWS) certification examination administered by the instructor.
